The C-295MW is a transport aircraft having 5 to 10 tonne capacity with a rear ramp door for quick reaction and para dropping troops and cargo. It is powered by Pratt & Whitney PW127 engines, part of the PW100 family.
The Cabinet Committee on Security recently decided to procure the 56 of these aircraft from Spain to replace the aging Avro aircraft. The first-of-its-kind project approved by the Cabinet will involve the domestic manufacturing of the C-295MW aircraft under technology transfer by a private company. It will be worth 3 billion USD. While 16 of the aircraft will be delivered in flyaway condition, the rest will be manufactured in India.
