Gauri Lankesh Day
CanadaÂ’s Burnaby city has declared September 5 as Gauri Lankesh Day to commemorate the life of journalist-turned activist who was shot dead outside her house in Bengaluru four years ago. Mayor of Burnaby city in British Colombia signed the proclamation to observe this day.
Lankesh was killed in 2017 by members of a gang allegedly because of her anti-Hindutva stand. She was conferred with Anna Politkovskaya Award for her stance against right-wing Hindu extremism, campaign support women’s rights and opposition against caste-based discrimination. She was the editor of Lankesh Patrike and published her own weekly “Gauri Lankesh Patrike”.
