Gissar Military Aerodrome

Gissar Military Aerodrome (GMA), commonly known as the Ayni airbase after village Ayni, is India’s first-ever overseas base operated with Tajikistan. The purpose of this base is to provide strategic advantage to India and Tajikistan’s military operations and training. It aims to make use of the strategic position of Tajikistan, which shares boundaries with China and Pakistan.
The airbase is located west of the Tajik capital Dushanbe. It is funded by the Indian Government. It played a major role in Operation Devi Shakti – the evacuation mission undertaken by India to rescue Indian citizens and Afghan partners from Kabul, which is currently under the control of the Taliban.
