Prime Minister Narendra Modi was recently honored with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour by French President Emmanuel Macron. This esteemed recognition, the highest honor bestowed by France, symbolizes the exceptional contributions and achievements of individuals in various fields. The Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour highlights Prime Minister Modi’s significant role in strengthening bilateral ties between India and France.

The Legion of Honour: A Revered Decoration:

The Legion of Honour, established by former French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is the highest decoration awarded to deserving individuals in all fields of activity. This prestigious order has been conferred upon prominent personalities for two centuries, recognizing their remarkable accomplishments and dedication.

Five Degrees of the Legion of Honour:

The Legion of Honour is divided into five degrees, starting from the lowest to the highest: Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer, and Grand Cross. Prime Minister Modi was bestowed with the Grand Cross, signifying the highest honor and recognition for his exceptional contributions.

Symbolism and Design:

The badge of the Legion of Honour is a five-armed Maltese asterisk suspended from an oak and laurel wreath. The ribbon is vibrant red, symbolizing courage and valor. The obverse side of the badge features the effigy of the Republic, while the reverse side showcases two tricolor flags encircled by the French motto, “Honor and Fatherland.”

Membership and Foreign Recognition:

While the Legion of Honour is primarily limited to French nationals, foreign nationals who serve France or uphold its ideals can also receive this prestigious distinction. Over 79,000 members have been honored with the Legion of Honour to date, with approximately 300 foreign nationals receiving the recognition each year. Notable personalities, including former South African President Nelson Mandela, King Charles (then Prince of Wales), former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, have also received this esteemed honor.
