The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Andhra Pradesh, is a haven of biodiversity, housing around 35 species of mangrove plants. Recently, the coastal area of Hope Island, part of this sanctuary, witnessed an exciting avian event. For the first time in a long period, a group of five Greater Flamingoes made an appearance.
The Greater Flamingoes: A Detailed Insight
Greater Flamingoes, the largest of all flamingos and the state bird of Gujarat, boast a widespread distribution range. From Africa’s various regions to the southeastern parts of Asia and southern Europe, these birds grace multiple terrains with their presence. Coastal areas of India and Pakistan also fall within their Asian range.
During winter, these flamingoes from the northern regions often migrate to warmer climates. Changes in water levels, food scarcity, and intra-colony competition are other triggers for their migratory behavior. Interestingly, these species form monogamous pairs, staying together for life.
Habitat and Dietary Preferences
Greater Flamingoes show a distinct preference for coastal saltwater lagoons. Large alkaline and saline lakes are also part of their chosen habitats. As omnivores, their meal plan includes mollusks, crustaceans, insects, crabs, worms, small fishes, and plant materials like algae, grass, decaying leaves, and shoots.
Their beaks, equipped with comb-like plates arranged in rows, function as effective filters for small invertebrates and insects while feeding. Their characteristic pink hue is derived from consuming brine shrimps and algae, abundant in the coastal wetlands. The presence of these birds symbolize a healthy coastal environment.
