Public Sector Companies receive Govt support for vaccine production

The Government of India has decided to provide support to some public sector companies by advancing them grants so as to boost Covid-19 vaccine production under the Mission COVID Suraksha.

Among the companies that have received the grants one is from Hyderabad. Indian Immunological limited (IIL) (a facility under the PSU named National Dairy Development Board) and Bharat Biotech has signed a technical agreement under which IIL will supply drug substance to Bharat Biotech which is required to produce the COVAXIN Vaccine.

About Mission Covid Suraksha

  • Under Atmanirbhar Bharat 3.0, Mission COVID Suraksha was launched. This mission has been launched with the aim to enable efforts of the development of indigenous, accessible and affordable vaccines produced in India.
  • Under this mission, preclinical development through multiple clinical trials and manufacturing along with regulatory facilitation to consolidate all the available and funded resources so as to accelerate development of the vaccines will be focused upon.
  • Rs 900 Crore for 12 months was allotted under Phase 1 of the program. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has provided the grants to conduct various research and development on the Indian Covid-19 vaccines.
  • This mission is led by the DBT while it has been implemented by Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC)

Objective

  • To provide license to the Covid-19 vaccines in the clinical stage.
  • To help in the acceleration of clinical and pre-clinical development of the vaccines.
  • Establishing clinical trials.
  • To strengthen and upgrade the existing central laboratories and other suitable facilities.
  • To help in development of various protocols, data management systems and trainings, etc.
