Hynniewtrep Achik Liberation Council
Hynniewtrep Achik Liberation Council (HALC) is the first-ever prominent separatist tribal militant group that was founded in the mid-1980s in Meghalaya. The term “Hynniewtrep” means the Khasi and Jaintia communities and the term “Achik” refers to the Garo community.
The militant group later split into Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), which represented the Khasis and the Jaintias and the Achik Matgrik Liberation Army, which represents the Garos. The latter was later replaced by the Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC). While the HNLC sought independence from India, the ANVC wanted a Garo homeland within the Indian Constitution.
