India Supports France Amid Controversy over Freedom of Expression

Recently, India emerged as a defender of France’s President in a global controversy over freedom of expression. This comes amidst criticism laid on him from Pakistan and Turkey, arguing that his strong support for French citizens’ right to freedom of expression is indicative of an anti-Islamic agenda. Amidst such turmoil, it becomes imperative to delve deeper into the matter.

Background

A recent event where a French schoolteacher was killed for showing caricatures of Prophet Muhammad to his pupils served as the trigger for this international discourse. In reaction to this horrific incident, French President defended the cause of freedom of expression and secular values; a gesture that triggered accusations of furthering an anti-Islamic sentiment from Turkey and Pakistan. Notably, Iran and Saudi Arabia also showed their disdain towards the controversial caricatures. Widespread calls for boycotting French products were heard throughout the Muslim world.

India’s Stance on the Issue

Condemning the outright criticism of the French President by Turkey and Pakistan, India portrayed these allegations as contrary to the basic standards of any international exchange. The brutal murder of the schoolteacher was also denounced by the Indian government. It is worth noting that this is an unusual instance of India stepping into a religious controversy in a foreign county. This stance has historical roots dating back to 2015 when India stood by those condemning the appalling attack on Charlie Hebdo’s journalists and cartoonists.

India-France Relations: A Paradigm of Mutual Interest

The supportive stand by India could be attributed to the longstanding strategic ties between India and France. Their shared interests span across a wide array of issues – counter-terrorism, defence, nuclear, and space being chief among them. France has previously supported India’s proposal for an international terrorism conference and both nations have shown commitment towards curbing terrorist financing.

On the defence front, they conduct regular dialogues and exercises at the ministerial level. The recent acquisition of French Rafale aircraft by the Indian Air Force is a testimony to their defence cooperation.

The two nations have also decided to enhance their collaboration in space missions, with France having agreed to be part of India’s upcoming Venus mission. Another significant aspect of their relationship is how France has supported India on numerous issues at the UN Security Council – from Kashmir to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

Climate Concerns

India and France share a common front on crucial global challenges such as climate change. Their formation of the International Solar Alliance stands as an example of this cooperation.

The Way Forward

Essentially, the relations between India and France are rooted in democratic values and shared interests, such as sustainable development and dealing with climate change. Following Britain’s exit from the European Union, France offers a pathway for stronger engagement with Europe on global issues. An enhanced alliance with France, Germany, Japan, and other like-minded nations are expected to significantly bolster India’s relevance on the global stage.
