Indian PM Lays Foundation for Railway Station Redevelopment

Article:

In a significant boost to Indian Railways, the Prime Minister has recently initiated the redevelopment of 508 railway stations nationwide under the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme. This ambitious project, spanning 27 states and union territories, is designed to revamp the infrastructure and elevate passenger experience across the country.

About the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme

Launched in February 2023 by the Ministry of Railways, the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme targets the overhaul of 1309 railway stations. The central goal is to modernize amenities, optimize traffic circulation, strengthen inter-modal integration and install clear signage for better passenger guidance. A mammoth undertaking, this scheme is expected to cost upwards of RS 24,470 crores.

Station-Wise Plans Guided by Local Heritage

One of the scheme’s notable aspects is the focus on local culture and heritage. The plan envisions station buildings that mirror the aesthetics of their surroundings, with designs inspired by local architecture. For example, the Jaipur Railway Station will incorporate design elements reminiscent of Rajasthan’s iconic Hawa Mahal and Amer Fort.

Integrated Urban Development Approach

The redevelopment project approaches each station as “City Centres,” postulating a holistic approach to urban development. It aims to integrate both sides of the city and ensure efficient traffic circulation and inter-modal connectivity.

Beneficial Spin-offs of Redevelopment

The enhanced stations promise several benefits for passengers, ranging from upgraded waiting rooms, improved platform seating, and free Wi-Fi. Moreover, local community input will shape the redevelopment plans, thereby underlying regional essence in the station’s design and amenities.

Focusing on Environment Sustainability

In line with India’s aspirational goal of net-zero emissions by 2030, the scheme emphasizes green energy utilization and reduction of emissions. Around 70,000 coaches will be fitted with LED lights, and the number of bio-toilets in trains will significantly increase as part of this commitment.
