The Indian state of Ladakh is all set to host India’s first “frozen-lake marathon” at the Pangong Tso lake. This event is being organized on February 20 and is being referred to as the “Last Run” to emphasize the issue of climate change. The marathon will take place at an altitude of 13,862 feet and will cover a distance of 21 kilometers starting at Lukung and ending at Maan village.
Last Run India’s First Frozen-Lake Marathon
The Pangong Tso lake, which is a high-altitude lake located in the Himalayan mountain range, is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in India. The lake is surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and is well-known for its stunning blue waters. This year, the lake will also be home to India’s first “frozen-lake marathon.”
The Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have been roped in for the smooth functioning of the event. The marathon is being organized as an effort to highlight the effects of climate change on the Himalayan region. The marathon is also expected to draw participants from all over the world, who are interested in taking part in an extreme sporting event.
The Significance of the Event
The “Last Run” is being organized to emphasize the urgency of taking action to combat climate change. The high-altitude regions of the Himalayas are especially vulnerable to the effects of global warming. The melting of glaciers in these regions is a clear indication of the impact of climate change on these fragile ecosystems. The melting of glaciers not only leads to a decrease in the water levels of rivers and lakes, but also leads to soil erosion, landslides, and other environmental problems.
