INS Dhruv is IndiaÂ’s first specialized research ship capable of tracking incoming nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles and aircraft at long ranges as well as monitor low earth orbit satellites. The 15,000-tonn-indigenously built ship is equipped with dome-shaped tracking antennae and advanced electronics. It was earlier codenamed as VC 11184Â’.
The missile range instrumentation ship, which will be commissioned on September 10, would be a major boost to IndiaÂ’s early warning military capabilities. Once launched, it would make India one among the select group of countries like the US, Russia, China and France to have such specialized vessels.
