The 5th edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, originally scheduled for inauguration on 12th December 2020, has been postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. The new date set for the event is 1st November 2021.
About the Kochi-Muziris Biennale
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is a premier art exhibition and festival in South Asia. It is organized by the Kochi Biennale Foundation, situated in Kochi, Kerala. As a non-profit charitable trust, the foundation dedicates its efforts to promote art, culture, and educational activities across India. Throughout the year, it works towards strengthening the contemporary art infrastructure and expanding public access to art. It organises an array of programmes that cater to a diverse audience.
Muziris: A Historical Perspective
In mythology, Muziris is described as one of the earliest port cities in the world. It gained prominence when Kerala emerged as a major centre for spice trade, with Muziris at its hub. Today, the importance of Muziris is highlighted through the Muziris Heritage Project. This project stands as one of the largest conservation projects in India. Through a joint initiative by the state and central government, the rich culture of the area, dating back over 3000 years, is being conserved and promoted.
The Biennale Experience
The Kochi-Muziris Biennale provides a platform for showcasing artwork across various mediums. These include film, installation, painting, sculpture, new media, and performance art. The event is not solely confined to the exhibition of artworks. It extends its reach to offer seminars, screenings, music, workshops, and educational activities. School children and students are especially encouraged to participate and engage in these activities to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of art and culture.
The postponement of the 5th edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is a reflection of the significant challenges the pandemic poses to cultural events worldwide. However, the commitment to maintain public health has guided this decision. As the world looks forward to overcoming the pandemic, the anticipation for the upcoming edition of the biennale grows, promising an enriching experience in the world of art and culture.
