Lemru Elephant Reserve

The Lemru Elephant Reserve is proposed to be set up in Chhattisgarh. The proposal to establish this reserve was passed by the Assembly in 2005 and received the Central Government’s assent in 2007. It is one of the two reserves proposed by the government to prevent human-animal conflict in the region with elephants moving into Chhattisgarh from Odisha and Jharkhand.
The Chhattisgarh government is looking to reduce the area of the reserve from 1,995 sq km to 450 sq km. This is because of the conflict of interest with regards to the area of the reserve that falls in Hasdeo Aranya forests, which has large deposits of coal and thus, is of economic importance.
