Live Events Development Cell Boosts Concert Economy

Live Events Development Cell Boosts Concert Economy

India’s live events sector is expanding rapidly and is being positioned as a major driver of employment, tourism and cultural growth. To support this momentum, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has set up the Live Events Development Cell (LEDC) as a single-window facilitation mechanism for the industry. The move aims to strengthen the country’s concert economy and improve coordination among government bodies and private stakeholders.

What the LEDC Does

The LEDC was constituted in July 2025 under the direction of the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting. It brings together representatives of the Central and State governments, industry associations, music rights societies and major event companies. Its purpose is to ease approvals, improve coordination and support the expansion of live entertainment across India.

Sector Growth and Market Size

The organised live events market was valued at ₹20,861 crore in 2024 and grew by 15%. Government estimates suggest an expected compound annual growth rate of 18%, which could place India among the leading global live entertainment destinations by 2030. The sector is now seen as an important part of the wider media and entertainment ecosystem.

Employment and Economic Impact

The live events industry supports over 10 million jobs across its value chain. A single large-format event can generate more than 15,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The sector also boosts related areas such as hospitality, transport, security, logistics and local commerce. This makes it for both urban and regional economic activity.

Growth in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities

Live entertainment is spreading beyond major metros. Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are emerging as new cultural hubs. Strong growth has been recorded in several cities, including Shillong, Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Visakhapatnam and Vadodara. Footfalls in live entertainment have increased across concerts, sports and theatre. More than five lakh people travelled to other cities for live events, showing rising inter-city cultural mobility.
