Long Range Bomb

The LR bomb (Long Range Bomb) is India’s first 1 ton long-range bomb. Defense Research and Development Organization has developed and designed this bomb. The bomb can carry a warhead of 1,000 kilograms and can hit the target up to a 100 km distance.

Highlights

The LR bomb was successfully tested in flight in the month of October 2021. It was launched from an Indian Air Force fighter. It was launched at an altitude of 10 kilometers. The bomb uses laser guidance to attack the target. India has used Israeli laser-guided bombs in all operations from Kargil. LR Bomb allows India to attack ground targets up to 100km. The LR bomb was developed with the aim to destroy any active airfield runway.

The bomb’s flight and performance were monitored by multiple range sensors, including an EOTS electro-optical tracking system, telemetry, and radar deployed at Chandipur Integrated Test Range in the state of Odisha.

The LR bomb was developed and designed by the Research Center Imarat, a DRDO laboratory which is located in Hyderabad, in collaboration with the other laboratories of DRDO.

Bombs use an exothermic reaction to generate sudden, powerful energy. It was first used in East Asia in the year 1221 by Jurchen Jin against the city of Chinese Song.
