Matti banana

The unique Matti banana variety, native to Kanniyakumari district, has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. There are six distinct types of Matti banana that thrive in the region’s special climate and soil. Referred to as ‘Baby Banana,’ these bananas are renowned for their sweet fragrance and honey-like taste, specific to Kanniyakumari. Notably, each type has its own characteristics: Nal Matti has a yellowish-orange hue, Theyn Matti tastes like honey, Kal Matti exhibits calcium oxalate crystals, Nei Matti smells like ghee, and Sundari Matti is at risk of extinction due to its unique traits. The GI tag signifies geographical origin and distinctive qualities.
