May 28: World Menstrual Hygiene Day

The World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed annually on 28th May. This day is observed around the globe with the aim address the social stigmas related to menstruation and to raise awareness regarding the importance of maintaining of menstrual hygiene.

Menstrual Hygiene Day launched by

The World Menstrual Hygiene Day was first initiated by a German non-profit organisation called WASH United to normalise and spread awareness about menstruation. WASH United also acts as the global coordinator for the observance of this day.  World Menstrual Hygiene Day was first launched in the year 2014.

Aim of the Menstrual Hygiene Day

On the Menstrual Hygiene Day through the voices and various actions of individuals, non-profits, government agencies, media and private sectors on promotion of good menstrual health and hygiene for women and girls across the world is advocated. The day also aims to shed the various social taboos associated with menstruation and to change negative social norms revolving around it.

Importance of choosing this date

28th May was chosen as the World Menstrual Hygiene Day because it highlights average menstrual cycle of a woman.  Generally, women start menstruating after every 28 days and it lasts for an average of 5 days.

Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health is the theme for this year.
