Every year, Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) engage in a significant competition in India. The Ministry of Education has recently released the 7th Edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings for the year 2022. This marks a notable milestone as NIRF is considered an essential effort by the government to rank the country’s HEIs since its inception in September 2015.
The initiative was launched as a counter to the subjectivity present in other ranking methodologies such as QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Ranking. Indian HEIs required their own ranking system, aligning with the standard set in Shanghai Rankings. The long-term plan for NIRF encompasses its emergence as a prominent international league table.
Participation and Assessment Criteria
Following its launch, participation in NIRF was made mandatory in 2018 for all government-run educational institutions. The 2022 edition saw more than 7,000 institutes participate in NIRF Rankings. These institutions are assessed on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Peer Perception.
NIRF Categories
NIRF identifies and ranks the best institutions across 11 categories. These categories include overall national ranking, universities, engineering, college, medical, management, pharmacy, law, architecture, dental, and research.
