Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Established in 1992, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a federally protected marine area in California. It the largest US national marine sanctuary, having a shoreline length of 444 km. It was established for protecting resources and promoting marine research and education.
Recently, a rare sighting of 90-feet long blue whales were caught from Monterey Harbour. These mammals are observed during summer and fall seasons. Around 2,000 blue whales reach the waters off the CaliforniaÂ’s central coast, including the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This region hosts the worldÂ’s largest percentage of blue whales.
