The National Statistics Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has launched the beta version of its Model Context Protocol server for the eSankhyiki portal, the national platform for official statistics. The new system is designed to make government data easier to access through AI tools and applications, without the need to download large datasets. It is part of a wider effort to improve data-driven policy making and support the vision of Viksit Bharat.
What the MCP Server Does
The Model Context Protocol server allows users to connect directly with official datasets through their own digital tools. It enables faster querying, automation of reports, and integration of statistics into analysis platforms. This reduces time spent on data retrieval and improves the speed of decision making.
Datasets Included in Beta Launch
The beta version currently covers seven major data products:
- Periodic Labour Force Survey
- Consumer Price Index
- Annual Survey of Industries
- Index of Industrial Production
- National Account Statistics
- Wholesale Price Index
- Environmental Statistics
More datasets from the eSankhyiki portal will be added in phases based on user feedback and technical readiness.
Significance for Governance and Users
The initiative aims to make official statistics more accessible to citizens, researchers, businesses, and policymakers. It supports technology-agnostic access to government data and strengthens the use of real-time statistics in planning and analysis. The launch also reflects the growing role of AI-enabled systems in public data infrastructure.
Link with AI and Future Expansion
The launch comes ahead of the AI Impact Summit scheduled for February 15-20, 2026. It aligns with Working Group 6 on Democratising AI chaired by Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary, MoSPI. Users can access the MCP server through the ministryโs data innovation website, and technical documentation is available online.
