On 27th June, Prime Minister Modi will launch the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh. This mission aims to combat sickle cell disease and its impact on the tribal communities across the country.
Understanding Sickle Cell Anaemia
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that affects a significant number of individuals in India. It is caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin-? gene found on chromosome 11. This genetic mutation results in the production of defective hemoglobin (Hb), leading to the characteristic sickle-shaped red blood cells. SCD is an autosomal recessive disease, which means that both parents must carry the gene for the child to be affected.
Mission Focus and Coverage
The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission primarily focuses on the tribal areas of 17 high-focused states and 278 districts across the country. These states include Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar, and Uttarakhand. By targeting these regions, the mission aims to provide specialized care and support to the tribal communities affected by sickle cell disease.
Universal Screening for Early Intervention
A key component of the mission is the universal screening of approximately seven crore individuals in the age group of 0-40 years. This screening process will help in early identification of individuals with sickle cell disease, enabling timely interventions and reducing the burden of the disease on affected individuals and their families. Early detection plays a crucial role in managing the condition effectively and improving the quality of life for those affected.
Sickle Cell Genetic Status Cards
As part of the mission, sickle cell genetic status cards will be distributed to the beneficiaries. These cards serve as an important tool for individuals to understand their genetic status and make informed decisions regarding their health and well-being. The cards will also facilitate access to appropriate healthcare services and support systems, ensuring that affected individuals receive the necessary care and treatment.
Distribution of AB-PMJAY Cards
In addition to the sickle cell genetic status cards, the Prime Minister will also initiate the distribution of approximately 3.57 crore Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) cards in Madhya Pradesh. This campaign aims to maximize the reach and coverage of welfare schemes, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of 100% saturation. The distribution of AB-PMJAY cards will ensure that individuals have access to comprehensive healthcare services, including the treatment and management of sickle cell disease.
Awareness Building and Collaborative Efforts
The mission recognizes the importance of awareness building and collaborative efforts in combating sickle cell disease. Extensive awareness campaigns will be conducted by central ministries and state governments to educate people about the disease, its symptoms, and preventive measures. By promoting awareness, the mission aims to encourage early detection, prompt treatment, and effective management of sickle cell disease.
A Healthier Future
The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission is a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by sickle cell disease. Through universal screening, distribution of genetic status cards, and collaborative efforts, the mission aims to eliminate sickle cell disease as a public health problem by 2047. The distribution of AB-PMJAY cards further reinforces the government’s commitment to ensuring the reach and impact of welfare schemes. These initiatives are crucial in promoting the well-being of the population and building a healthier nation.
