Rafah Crossing Reopens After Nearly Two Years

Rafah Crossing Reopens After Nearly Two Years

Rafah border crossing, Gaza’s only land link with Egypt, has reopened after being closed for nearly two years. The move allows a limited number of Palestinians to enter and exit the territory, which has been heavily affected by war. The reopening follows delays linked to the ceasefire process between Israel and Hamas and the handover of the last Israeli hostage’s body.

Why Rafah Crossing Matters

Rafah is the main gateway for Palestinians travelling between Gaza and Egypt. Before its closure, it was the principal exit point for people permitted to leave Gaza during wartime. It also served as a major entry route for humanitarian assistance.

Conditions At The Border

Only a small number of people are being allowed to cross. No goods are currently permitted to pass through. For the first few days, only 50 people are expected to cross in both directions each day. The reopening has brought relief to many Palestinians, but movement remains tightly restricted.

Humanitarian Significance

Local hospitals and the World Health Organisation have said that around 20,000 sick and injured Palestinians are waiting to leave Gaza for treatment. The limited reopening is therefore important for medical evacuation and family reunification. The crossing is being operated by the European Union as part of the first phase of the US-brokered ceasefire arrangement.

Background To The Closure

The crossing was closed in May 2024 after the Gazan side was captured by Israeli forces. It had been expected to reopen earlier under the ceasefire framework. The reopening was delayed until the return of the last Israeli hostage’s body was completed.
