Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Route Expansion

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Route Expansion

India is in dialogue with China to explore an additional route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, including the possible use of Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh. The pilgrimage resumed through existing routes in 2025 after earlier disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and border-related restrictions. The government has said that it continues efforts to improve access and safety for Indian pilgrims.

Current Route Arrangements

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra was organised in 2025 between June and August through two official routes:

  • Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand.
  • Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.

The pilgrimage was coordinated with the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim, along with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Talks on Additional Access

India has earlier requested China to open alternative routes for the yatra, including Shipki La Pass. The Chinese side had cited difficulties in opening more routes. The government has now reiterated that it remains engaged with Beijing on the issue. The aim is to provide improved access for pilgrims and reduce dependence on limited routes.

Pilgrim Support and Safety Measures

The Ministry of External Affairs provides assistance to yatris on a self-financing basis. Support includes:

  • Transportation.
  • Accommodation.
  • Food.
  • Medical tests.
  • Guides.

The ministry also coordinates with Chinese authorities and Indian agencies to ensure smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. For emergencies, arrangements exist to airlift pilgrims by helicopter on the Indian side if required.

Religious and Strategic Significance

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra holds deep spiritual importance for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of Bon. It is also relevant in India-China relations because route access depends on bilateral coordination and border-related sensitivities. The reopening and possible expansion of routes is therefore both a religious and diplomatic issue.
