Salem Sago’s Direct GI Export

India’s push to promote value-added agri exports received a boost as GI-tagged Salem Sago was exported directly to Canada for the first time. Facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the consignment marks a significant milestone in linking Geographical Indication (GI) certification with global market access and farmer income enhancement.

The First Direct Export from GI Authorised User

The export of 0.5 metric tonnes of Salem Sago was shipped directly by SAGOSERVE, the GI Authorised User Society. This is the first such consignment since the product received its GI tag in March 2023.

The GI registration was secured under the Government of Tamil Nadu, formalising Salem’s long-standing reputation as India’s sago hub. Traditionally, Salem Sago had been exported through traders; this direct shipment reflects a shift toward producer-led export models.

Role of APEDA in Expanding Agri Exports

The initiative was facilitated by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), functioning under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

APEDA’s strategy focuses on:

  • Promoting GI-tagged agricultural products globally.
  • Creating direct linkages between producer societies and international buyers.
  • Encouraging value-added exports rather than raw commodity trade.
  • Enhancing branding and traceability of Indian agri products.

Such interventions align with India’s broader goal of diversifying export baskets and increasing farmers’ share in export value chains.

Why Salem Matters in India’s Sago Industry

4

Salem has long been recognised as the nucleus of India’s sago and starch industry. Tamil Nadu is the largest producer of tapioca sago (sabudhana), derived from tapioca roots.

Key features of SAGOSERVE include:

  • 334 registered member-manufacturers.
  • Provision of warehousing and quality control facilities.
  • Initiatives to improve tapioca cultivation and sago processing standards.

The industry sustains a large farming population, including tribal communities engaged in tapioca cultivation. Enhanced export realisation can directly strengthen rural incomes.

GI Tag and Economic Significance

Geographical Indication (GI) is a form of intellectual property protection that recognises products with specific regional identity and unique qualities.

The GI status of Salem Sago:

  1. Protects authenticity and prevents misuse of the name.
  2. Enhances product branding in global markets.
  3. Improves price realisation for producers.
  4. Strengthens traceability and quality assurance.

Traditionally supplied to domestic markets such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and West Bengal, Salem Sago has also been exported to the USA, UK, Canada, Vietnam, and Singapore. The direct export by the GI Authorised User Society represents a structural shift in trade practices.

Export Diversification and Future Outlook

An export-focused programme was organised at SAGOSERVE premises on 18 February 2026 to explore further global markets. More such export flag-offs are planned as part of APEDA’s GI promotion drive.

This initiative reflects a broader trend:

  • Moving from intermediary-led exports to producer-owned export channels.
  • Integrating GI certification with international branding strategies.
  • Strengthening rural industrial clusters under the “Vocal for Local” and Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

If scaled, similar GI-based export models could transform other region-specific agri products into globally competitive brands.
