The Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) is a survey measure that delivers critical information about current and prospective business scenarios to companies, analysts, and investors. This metric has recently been in the spotlight after reaching an impressive 13-year high of 62.3 in July, following a three-month low in June.
Understanding the PMI
The PMI is computed separately for the manufacturing and services sectors, and then combined into a composite index. The index ranges from 0 to 100, with a PMI above 50 indicating expansion and a PMI less than 50 representing contraction. The recent PMI surge not only highlights the sector’s resilience but also demonstrates its role in pushing economic growth. South Asian countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the UAE have been instrumental in driving growth for India’s services sector.
Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana: A Boost for Bio-Ethanol Projects
In other economic affairs, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas recently provided valuable insights into the Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana. Introduced in March 2019, this scheme focuses on integrated bio-ethanol projects using lignocellulosic biomass and other renewable feedstocks. The project received a total financial backing of Rs. 1969.50 crore for the period between 2018-19 and 2023-24. Key states reaping the benefits of this initiative are Punjab, Haryana, Odisha, Assam, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Initiatives like these help to enhance commercial viability, drive research and development activities, and promote technology adoption in the domain of 2G ethanol production.
CHD1L Gene Variant: A Potential Shield Against HIV Progression?
A compelling study recently published in the journal Nature has discovered that specific individuals of African descend carry a unique gene variant named Chromodomain Helicase DNA Binding Protein 1 Like (CHD1L). This gene variant is exclusively seen in the African populace and has been associated with reduced viral loads of HIV-1, the most virulent strain of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The functions of this gene include coding for proteins that assist in DNA damage repair. This capability results in a lessened potential to transmit the virus and slows the progression of the disease in carriers.
MASI: A Revolutionary Approach to Child Care Institution Oversight
The Ministry of Women and Child Development recently provided insights into the MASI Portal. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) introduced an application named ‘MASI’ (Monitoring App for Seamless Inspection), designed to enhance real-time monitoring of Child Care Institutions (CCIs) and their inspection processes across India. MASI was developed due to the necessity of managing inspections commanded by the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. This tool enables unified inspections by various authorities such as Child Welfare Committees (CWCs), State Inspection Committees, Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs), and State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCRs).
