Shackleton’s Endurance

Endurance was a three-masted barquentine used by Sir Ernest Shakleton and his crew for undertaking the 1914-1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Launched in 1912 from Norway, the ship had hit a pack ice and sank in the Weddell Sea of Antarctica in 1915.

A major expedition called Endurance22 was announced recently to locate, survey and film the wreckage. The expedition, expected to be launched next year, will be far less difficult than the preceding ones because of the global warming and the rapid melting of ice. The scientists will also undertake climate research during this expedition.
