Spicomellus afer

Spicomellus afer is the newly discovered species of ankylosaurus – a diverse group of armored herbivorous dinosaurs. It is the earliest known ankylosaur and the first ankylosaur to be named from Africa. It roamed the region in the present-day Morocco some 168 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic period.
The newly discovered specimen is a slightly curved dorsal rib fragment with four elongated, conical spines. It was found in the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco, the site where the oldest stegosaur Adratiklit boulahfa was found. Its discovery provides better understanding of genus Ankylosauria.
