Sree Narayana Guru
Sree Narayana Guru is a prominent social reformer in Kerala, who advocated for social equality, universal education and caste-free society. Born in the Ezhava caste, his experience with caste-based discrimination shaped his lifeÂ’s work to oppose the social injustices. He consecrated the first Shiva temple in 1888 in KeralaÂ’s Aruvippuram village, where an idol was ordinated by a non-Brahmin. This inspired the anti-caste revolution in the region.
Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti is celebrated on August 23 across Kerala. It is also observed as a public holiday to commemorate the birth anniversary of the social reformer.
