Symplocos Mohananii

Symplocos Mohananii is a new plant discovered in Kerala?s Ponmudi hills, which forms part of the Western Ghats and one of the world?s 8 hotspots of biological diversity. The new plant was named after Dr N Mohanan, the former principal scientist and new scientific adviser of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Wayanad.
The tree has distinctive micro and macro characters, setting it apart from the other plants of genus Symplocos. The new species is found to have some medicinal properties. It has white flowers and their opening, which usually occurs during the night, have not been recorded yet.
