TOP Scheme Boosts India’s Olympic Medal Prospects

The Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme is a sports initiative in India introduced in 2014. Its formulation was under the broad scope of the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF). The fundamental objective of the TOP scheme is to recognize, nurture, and prepare potential medal prospects for both the Olympic and Parablympic Games.

High Priority Category

A distinct category named ‘High Priority’ has been formed in this scheme. This category emphasizes those sports disciplines featured in the Olympics where India has previously demonstrated success. Specifically, these are the sports in which India has secured medals in the most recent Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, or the sports where India shows a promising chance of winning medals in the future. As of now, there are nine sports disciplines that have been categorized as ‘High Priority’.

‘High Priority’ Sports Disciplines

The sports disciplines that have been designated as ‘High Priority’ under the TOP Scheme are:

1. Athletics
2. Badminton
3. Hockey
4. Shooting
5. Tennis
6. Weightlifting
7. Wrestling
8. Archery
9. Boxing

A Brief about National Sports Development Fund (NSDF)

The NSDF, under which the TOP Scheme operates, was established in November 1998. It was founded under the Charitable Endowments Act of 1890. The primary objective of NSDF is to promote sports and games across the country.

Reflections on India’s Performance and Future Prospects

While the Target Olympic Podium scheme holds immense potential for advancing sports development in India, it also emphasizes the significance of promoting sporting disciplines where the country has demonstrated past success or exhibits strong potential. The ‘High Priority’ categorization presents an avenue for Indian athletes to receive focused attention, dedicating resources that can maximize their chances of securing medals in future global sports events. Moreover, the initiative solidifies India’s commitment to fostering talent, nurturing athletic skillsets, and pursuing excellence in the global sporting arena. Fueled by the NSDF, the scheme is set to revolutionize the landscape of sports in India.
