Union Cabinet Approves Rs 24,104-Crore Tribal Welfare Initiative

India has taken a significant step towards improving the lives of its Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) with the approval of a monumental tribal welfare initiative. The Union Cabinet has given the green light for the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN). This landmark project, earmarked at Rs 24,104 crore, is set to positively affect over 40 lakh individuals across 75 tribal communities in 18 states and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Understanding The Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan

The PM-JANMAN is a government-funded program designed to enhance the lives of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). These are sub-classifications of Scheduled Tribes that are considered more vulnerable than regular Scheduled Tribes. These groups were previously known as Primitive Tribal Groups. The initiative focuses on pivotal elements such as housing, education, healthcare, connectivity, and livelihood opportunities, and thus encompasses a broad spectrum of initiatives.

Distribution of PVTGs in India

The distribution of PVTGs isn’t uniform throughout India. Odisha boasts the highest population of PVTGs based on data from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the 2011 Census. However, these groups spread across several other states and Union Territories, including Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Impactful Investment in Tribal Welfare

The sheer scale of the PM-JANMAN commitment is what sets it apart. With an investment of Rs 24,104 crore, this initiative indicates a significant financial commitment towards uplifting the lives of PVTGs in India. The funding is expected to reach over 40 lakh individuals across 75 tribal communities, making it one of the most extensive tribal development programs in the Indian Subcontinent.

Focusing on Fundamental Rights and Services

Central to the PM-JANMAN initiative is the recognition that housing, education, healthcare, connectivity, and livelihood opportunities are fundamental rights and services that should be accessible to all citizens, including the PVTGs. The program pushes for universal access to these pivotal elements, thereby revolutionizing the social fabric of these communities.

Expanding Opportunities and Enhancing Lives

By focusing on promoting education and healthcare facilities, as well as providing better connectivity and livelihood opportunities to these marginalized communities, the PM-JANMAN is aimed at genuinely enhancing the quality of life within these communities. These interventions will not only improve the day-to-day lives of community members but also create an environment where PVTGs can thrive and grow.

The PM-JANMAN represents a significant stride in India’s journey towards inclusive growth and development. With its scale and focus, the initiative is set to bring about profound positive changes in the lives of PVTGs across the country. Through this plan, the government of India reaffirms its commitment to the welfare and upliftment of the most vulnerable sections of society, ensuring that no citizen is left behind in the path towards progress.
