The Uttar Pradesh government has recently given its approval for two ultra-supercritical thermal power projects in Sonbhadra district. These projects, in collaboration with the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), aim to address the increasing power demand in the state while providing affordable electricity to its residents.
Utilizing Ultra-Supercritical Technology:
The approved thermal power projects, known as the Obra D projects, will mark a significant milestone for the state of Uttar Pradesh as they will be the first to utilize ultra-supercritical technology. This advanced technology operates at high temperatures and pressures, surpassing the critical point of water. As a result, it offers higher efficiency and reduces coal consumption while generating the same amount of power. By adopting this technology, the projects aim to enhance the overall efficiency of power generation and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
Enhanced Power Generation Capacity:
Located in Sonbhadra’s Obra district, the two thermal power projects are expected to substantially increase Uttar Pradesh’s power generation capacity. Each plant will have a capacity of 800MW, thus adding a combined total of 1,600MW to the state’s power generation capacity. With the current thermal power generation capacity standing at around 7,000MW, the implementation of these projects is anticipated to contribute approximately 25% to the state’s existing capacity. This significant boost in power generation will help meet the growing energy demands of Uttar Pradesh’s expanding population and industrial sectors.
Partnership with NTPC:
To ensure the successful execution of the projects, the Uttar Pradesh government has formed a 50:50 partnership with NTPC, a central government-owned power generator. Under this collaboration, both parties will jointly undertake the implementation of the thermal power projects. While the government and NTPC will provide 30% of the equity for project implementation, the remaining 70% will be sourced from financial institutions. This partnership signifies the commitment of both entities to meet the energy requirements of the state and promote sustainable development.
Power Hubs of Uttar Pradesh:
The decision to establish power plants in the Obra and Anpara regions reflects the state government’s vision to transform these areas into power hubs of the country. By concentrating power generation activities in these regions, Uttar Pradesh aims to meet the increasing energy demands and ensure reliable electricity supply to its residents. These power hubs will contribute significantly to the state’s power generation capacity, supporting industrial growth, job creation, and overall economic development.
