Uttarakhand Day is being observed today.
The Uttarakhand Day is celebrated on November 9 every year. The day is also known as Uttarakhand Divas or Uttarakhand State Foundation Day.
On the occasion the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Trivendra Singh Rawat, will inaugurate hot air balloon festival in Mussorie. Apart from that, the state will also organize Majestic Uttarakhand photo exhibitions and Heal with Wheels.
History of Uttarakhand
The demand for the creation of Uttarakhand as a separate state of Uttarakhand arose in the year 1897. The demand for a separate state turned into a full fledged mass movement in 1994. The movement lead to the formation of the Uttarakhand state in 2000.
The state is also known as the ‘Land of Gods’ or ‘Dev Bhumi. The state was earlier named as ‘Uttaranchal’ when it was formed. But in 2007, state was renamed to Uttarakhand. The high court of the state is located in Nainital. Rivers like Ganga, Kali, Yamuna and Tons are originated in the state. Out of total state, 86% area is mountainous while 65% of the area is covered by forest. The state is home to Bengal Tiger at the Jim Corbett National park. Some other national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the State include: Nanda Devi Biosphere, Govind National Park, Rajaji National Park, Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Gangotri National Park, Govind Wild Life Sanctuary, Asan Wildlife Sanctuary and Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Around 18,000 plant species have been recognised in Uttarakhand. Out of these, 1,800 plants have medicinal value. Local traditional healers in the state still uses these herbs for curing the diseases as per the traditional Ayurvedic text books.
