United Nations chief Antonio Guterres slammed the “wildly uneven and unfair” distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. He said by far only 10 countries have administered 75% of all vaccinations. He stressed that there is a need of vaccinating everyone as soon as possible.
Key Points
- United Nations Chief recently addressed a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council and pointed out that 130 countries have not received a single dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
- Expressing his concern over the problem, the UN chief called for a ‘Global Vaccination Plan’ for vaccinating all people in every nation.
- There should be a plan that ensures fair vaccine distribution for all.
- He urged the leading economic members of G20 should form an emergency task force for bringing together “the pharmaceutical companies and key industry and logistics actors”.
- Before this, State Department Secretary Antony Blinken at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) had also called for the need to expand access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines.
Now, in order to understand the pandemic in a better way, countries must make all the data available. This will also be a step towards becoming ready for any other such pandemic in the future. All the countries should participate in a robust and transparent process for preventing and responding to health emergencies.
