The Balikatan 2026 military exercises commenced on April 20, 2026, involving over 17,000 troops from the Philippines, the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, and France. The drills are scheduled to conclude on May 8, 2026. These exercises are held annually to enhance military cooperation and interoperability among participating nations.
Participating Countries and Troop Deployment
Japan is participating as a full combat partner for the first time, deploying approximately 1,400 ground troops. Previously, Japan’s role was limited to observers or non-combat support. Other countries involved include Canada, Australia, and France, alongside the host nation Philippines and the United States.
Exercise Locations and Activities
The drills are conducted in strategic locations such as northern Philippines near the Taiwan Strait and a province adjacent to the disputed South China Sea. Some exercises are taking place beyond the Philippines’ 12 nautical miles territorial waters for the first time. Activities include live-fire drills, with Japanese forces using a Type 88 cruise missile in a ship-sinking exercise in northwestern Philippine waters.
Advanced Weaponry and Agreements
The exercises involve advanced weapon systems like the US-developed Typhon missile and the BrahMos cruise missile. A reciprocal access agreement between Manila and Tokyo, effective from September 2025, allows Japanese Self-Defense Forces to operate in Philippine territory for exercises and other missions. Balikatan exercises aim to strengthen defence cooperation among allied nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
