Indian Army Raises Bhairav Special Force

Indian Army Raises Bhairav Special Force

The Indian Army has begun a major force transformation to prepare for hybrid and technology-driven warfare. A new Special Force, called Bhairav, has been raised with more than one lakh drone operatives across the force. The unit is designed for rapid, offensive action and for operations at tactical and operational depth. It is intended to bridge the gap between Para Special Forces and regular infantry battalions.

Purpose of Bhairav Battalions

Bhairav battalions have been created as dedicated formations for high-speed missions. They are meant to carry out special operations, target enemy bases and formations, and respond quickly in modern conflict scenarios. The Army has raised around 15 battalions so far and plans to expand the total to about 25 in the near future.

Training and Operational Role

Troops selected from infantry regiments are being trained for modern warfare requirements. The battalions are being equipped to handle drones and use them in real operations. They have also undergone operational validation during Exercise Akhand Prahar, where their readiness was demonstrated in the desert sector under Southern Command.

Desert Sector and Force Composition

One of the newly raised battalions has been formed in the desert sector with a Sons of the Soil concept. Most personnel are from Rajasthan, giving the unit local terrain knowledge, language familiarity and climate adaptability. The battalion is being developed as a technology-driven force capable of independent and multi-domain operations.

Broader Army Restructuring

The Bhairav initiative is part of wider restructuring in the Indian Army. Alongside these battalions, the Army has created Rudra Brigades, which combine infantry, mechanised units, tanks, artillery, special forces and unmanned aerial systems. The Artillery, Mechanised Infantry and Armoured Corps are also being upgraded with drones and other modern capabilities.
