Israel Joins Trump’s Board of Peace

Israel Joins Trump’s Board of Peace

Israel has formally joined the United States-led Board of Peace initiative, a body created under President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan to oversee temporary governance and reconstruction in the territory. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the move during his visit to Washington, where he met Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The development comes as the Gaza ceasefire remains fragile and the next phase of the peace framework faces major political and security hurdles.

What the Board of Peace Is

The Board of Peace was authorised by a United Nations Security Council resolution adopted in mid-November. It is meant to work with countries to establish an international stabilisation force in Gaza. Under Trump’s plan, the board is intended to supervise temporary governance and support reconstruction efforts. Trump has said the board, with him as chair, may later be expanded to address wider global conflicts.

Israel’s Entry and Political Significance

Netanyahu signed Israel’s accession to the board during his Washington visit. Visuals released after his meeting with Rubio showed the signed document. Israel’s participation is because the board does not include a Palestinian representative. This has intensified criticism from rights experts and observers who argue that the structure could resemble external control over a foreign territory.

Concerns Over Governance and UN Role

Many countries have reacted cautiously to the initiative. Some of Washington’s Middle Eastern partners have joined, while several traditional Western allies have stayed away. Critics fear the board may weaken the role of the United Nations in Gaza’s future governance. The first board meeting is scheduled for 19 February in Washington, with Gaza reconstruction expected to be on the agenda.

Gaza Ceasefire and Next Phase

The ceasefire that began in October has been repeatedly violated. The next phase of Trump’s plan includes difficult issues such as Hamas disarmament, further Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and deployment of an international peacekeeping force. The conflict has caused massive casualties, widespread displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis, while both sides continue to present sharply conflicting narratives about the war.
