India has condemned the killing of three Indonesian peacekeepers deployed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in south Lebanon. The incident has raised fresh concern over attacks on UN personnel amid intensified clashes involving Hezbollah and the Israeli Defence Forces in the region. India, which has around 600 troops serving with UNIFIL, called for the safety and inviolability of peacekeepers and sought accountability for attacks on UN missions.
What Happened in South Lebanon
A vehicle carrying peacekeepers was destroyed near Bani Hayyan municipality in south Lebanon after an explosion of unknown origin. The blast killed three Indonesian soldiers and injured another peacekeeper severely, while a fourth was also hurt. UNIFIL launched an investigation into the incident. The attack came amid a series of violent developments in the area and was described as the second fatal incident within 24 hours.
India’s Response and UN Position
India strongly condemned the attack and paid tribute to the fallen peacekeepers. It urged all parties to ensure the safety of UN personnel and protect the UN mission. India also linked the issue to the wider framework of accountability for crimes against peacekeepers under UN Security Council Resolution 2589. UN officials described deliberate attacks on peacekeepers as grave violations of international humanitarian law and possible war crimes.
UNIFIL and Its Mandate
UNIFIL was established by the UN Security Council in 1978 after Israel’s invasion of south Lebanon. Its original role was to help restore peace and assist the Lebanese government in maintaining authority in the south. Over time, it has remained one of the UN’s longest-running peacekeeping missions. The current situation has again brought into light the risks faced by Blue Helmets in conflict zones and the need to protect peacekeeping operations under international law.
Regional Conflict Context
The latest violence in south Lebanon is part of a broader regional conflict involving Israel, Hezbollah and other actors. UN officials have warned that peacekeepers must never be targeted. The incident has also prompted calls for a thorough investigation and stronger respect for UN mandates in active conflict areas.
