INS Sunayna Reaches Maldives Under IOS SAGAR

Indian Navy’s offshore patrol vessel INS Sunayna has arrived in Male as part of its deployment under the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative. The visit marks the first port call of the vessel’s current mission and marks India’s maritime engagement with the Maldives and the wider Indian Ocean Region.

Port Call in Male

INS Sunayna was received by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) with a ceremonial welcome. The visit reflects the close defence and maritime partnership between India and the Maldives. High Commissioner of India to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian, visited the ship and interacted with the crew during the port call.

Multinational Crew and Training

The vessel is operating with personnel from 16 friendly foreign countries. Two MNDF personnel are also part of the crew, underlining multinational cooperation. During transit to Male, the crew carried out seamanship drills, small arms firing, and damage control exercises. These activities were aimed at improving interoperability, operational readiness, and maritime coordination.

Bilateral Engagements and PASSEX

A series of professional exchanges, social interactions, and sporting events are planned during the port call to strengthen camaraderie and bilateral ties. After departure, INS Sunayna and the MNDF Coast Guard will conduct a Passage Exercise (PASSEX). The exercise will focus on improving coordination and joint operational capabilities at sea.

IOS SAGAR Initiative

IOS SAGAR is part of India’s broader maritime outreach and aligns with the Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR vision. The initiative emphasises capacity building, regional security, and stronger maritime partnerships. INS Sunayna was flagged off from Mumbai on 2 April and is deployed to the South East Indian Ocean Region under the theme One Ocean, One Mission.
