Delhi Police has launched Operation Shastra to act against individuals posting pictures of themselves with weapons on social media and using abusive language to create fear. The operation was carried out across the city to curb online intimidation, unlawful display of arms, and the spread of threatening content on digital platforms.
Objective of the Operation
The main aim of Operation Shastra was to identify and act against persons using social media to project criminal influence. Such posts were seen as attempts to build a fear-based image and disturb public order. The operation focused on both online behaviour and possible links to unlawful possession or use of weapons.
Scale of Police Action
More than 500 police teams and over 2,000 personnel were deployed for the drive. The operation covered a large number of social media profiles and involved coordinated monitoring, verification, and field action. This made it one of the larger targeted police actions against online intimidation in the capital.
Cases and Arrests
The operation led to 61 FIRs being registered. Based on scrutiny of more than 6,000 social media profiles, Delhi Police apprehended 83 accused persons. The action shows the increasing use of digital surveillance in policing offences linked to weapons, threats, and public disorder.
Significance for Public Safety
Operation Shastra marks the growing concern over the misuse of social media for criminal image-building. It also reflects the role of police in preventing the normalisation of weapon culture online. Such operations are relevant for maintaining law and order, especially in urban areas where digital content can quickly influence public perception.
