Maharashtra has approved a major administrative and digital governance overhaul by creating an independent Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence. The decision also includes restructuring key technical institutions, expanding geospatial capabilities, and strengthening disaster resilience through new financing and planning measures. The move is aimed at improving public service delivery, technology adoption and risk management across the state.
New Electronics and AI Department
The state will establish a separate Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence. The existing Information Technology Directorate will be upgraded into the Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence Commissionerate. This is expected to give focused administrative support to IT growth, AI adoption and digital governance.
Remote Sensing and Geotechnology Push
The Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) will be converted into a company. This step is intended to improve the use of remote sensing and geospatial data in public planning. It is likely to support road information systems, urban planning and implementation of schemes such as Jalayukta Shivar. The state has also approved the creation of the Maharashtra Geotechnology Application Centre Company to expand the use of geospatial technology in governance.
Resilient Development and Disaster Finance
The Cabinet approved the Maharashtra Resilient Development Programme (MRDP) to strengthen disaster preparedness and recovery. The programme will mobilise financing for disaster management with support from private capital. The state will receive ₹165 crore from the World Bank under this initiative. Affected citizens will get concessions on home loans, while micro, small and medium enterprises will receive loan relief and insurance coverage.
Flood Risk Reduction and Power Sector Restructuring
Preventive plans will be prepared for floodwater drainage in Kolhapur, Sangli and Ichalkaranji. Measures will also be taken to reduce flood risk in the Krishna River Basin. In another decision, the Cabinet approved financial restructuring of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL), also known as Mahavitaran, to improve its financial position and operational stability.
