Ganga Expressway Inaugurated in Uttar Pradesh

The 594-km-long Ganga Expressway was inaugurated on 29 April 2026 in Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh. It connects Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh with Prayagraj in eastern Uttar Pradesh and costs about Rs 36,230 crore.

Route and Length

The Ganga Expressway is Uttar Pradesh’s longest expressway. It passes through 12 districts: Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj.

Design and Capacity

The expressway is a six-lane access-controlled highway. It has provision for expansion to eight lanes in the future.

Travel and Connectivity

The expressway links the western and eastern regions of Uttar Pradesh through a high-speed road corridor. The travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj is expected to fall from 10–12 hours to about 6–7 hours.

Strategic Features

The project includes a 3.5-km-long airstrip in Shahjahanpur. The airstrip is designed for emergency take-off and landing of Indian Air Force aircraft.

An expressway is a controlled-access highway with limited entry and exit points. Such roads are built for higher speed, safer movement and reduced travel interruption. The Ganga Expressway is linked with industrial growth, logistics, agricultural marketing and regional development in Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the major road infrastructure projects in the state.
