Semiconductor Manufacturing Expansion India

Semiconductor Manufacturing Expansion India

The Union Cabinet approved two semiconductor manufacturing projects in Gujarat under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) on May 5, 2026. These projects involve a combined investment of approximately ₹3,936 crore and aim to generate around 2,230 direct skilled jobs. With these new approvals, the total number of sanctioned projects under the ISM has reached twelve, representing a collective investment of about ₹1.64 lakh crore. The initiative seeks to establish a self-reliant semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem, reducing India’s heavy reliance on electronic component imports.

Key Project Details and Approved Facilities

The two approved projects introduce distinct capabilities to India’s domestic semiconductor supply chain, ranging from display panel production to backend chip assembly.

Crystal Matrix Limited (Dholera)
  • Technology Focus: India’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display manufacturing unit.
  • Material Basis: Uses Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology for integrated compound semiconductor fabrication and assembly.
  • Production Capacity: Targeted to produce 72,000 square metres of Mini/Micro-LED panels annually.
  • Location: Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), Gujarat.
Suchi Semicon Private Limited (Surat)
  • Facility Type: Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility.
  • Production Capacity: Designed to package over 1,033 million discrete semiconductor chips per year.
  • End-Use Applications: Chips processed here will cater to power electronics, automotive systems, industrial automation, and consumer electronics.
  • Location: Surat, Gujarat.

Project Profiles and Infrastructure Metrics

The financial and operational metrics of the newly approved facilities indicate their scale within the domestic electronics manufacturing sector.

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) Framework

The India Semiconductor Mission operates as a specialized division within the Digital India Corporation to drive long-term strategies for developing semiconductors and display manufacturing facilities.

Core Pillars of ISM
  • Financial Incentives: Provides fiscal support up to 50% of the project cost on an equal basis for setting up Semiconductor Fabs and Display Fabs in India.
  • Modernization of SCL: Focuses on upgrading the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali as a research and development and commercial foundry facility.
  • Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme: Offers financial infrastructure support and product deployment incentives for domestic semiconductor design firms.
  • Talent Development: Partnerships with universities to create a specialized workforce proficient in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) and chip design.

IASPOINT Booster Facts for UPSC

  • Gallium Nitride (GaN) Properties: GaN is a wide-bandgap semiconductor material. It handles much higher voltages, temperatures, and frequencies than traditional silicon, making it ideal for efficient power electronics and advanced LED displays.
  • Silicon vs. Compound Semiconductors: While traditional chips use pure silicon, compound semiconductors like GaN or Silicon Carbide (SiC) are made from two or more elements, enabling faster electron mobility and lower energy loss.
  • OSAT Explained: Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test units do not fabricate wafers. Instead, they receive raw silicon wafers from foundries, cut them into individual dies, package them to prevent damage, and test them before final device integration.
  • Dholera SIR: Dholera is India’s first operational smart city and a major node of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), featuring dedicated zones for heavy engineering and electronics manufacturing.
  • Nodal Ministry: The India Semiconductor Mission functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
