ACROSS scheme

Economic Affairs cabinet committee which is chaired by PM Modi gave the approval for the continuation of the Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services (ACROSS) scheme for the year 2021-26. This scheme is an umbrella scheme under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and will cost Rs. 2135 crores.

The ACROSS program consists of eight subprograms implemented by a unit of the Ministry of Earth Sciences which are Indian Tropical Meteorological Research Institute  (IITM), India Meteorological Department (IMD), Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and National Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF).

About the scheme

The ACROSS scheme contains the atmospheric technological know-how applications of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The scheme pursuits in addressing distinctive elements of weather and climate services.

Benefits of the continuing the scheme

The continuation of the ACROSS program in 2021-26 period will improve weather, climate, ocean forecasting and services, and other services related to natural disasters. The ACROSS system benefits end users through a variety of services including public weather services, agricultural weather services, aviation services, environmental monitoring services, hydrometeor services, climate services, tourism, power generation, sports, pilgrimage and adventure, water management and more. The ACROSS program will create jobs by hiring workers in the process from service prediction to service delivery. The ACROSS program monitors meteorological, climate and marine activity and fulfils one of the Earth Sciences’ obligations to carry out research and  development activities for economic, social and environmental benefits, including addressing the climate change crisis.

Sub schemes of the ACROSS scheme

The eight sub scheme are Up gradation of Forecast System, Commissioning of Polari metric Doppler Weather Radars, Atmospheric Observations Network, Weather & Climate Services,  Monsoon Mission III, Numerical Modelling of Weather and Climate, High-Performance Computing System and Monsoon Convection, Clouds, and Climate Change.
