Assam Launches Udasin Bhakat Scheme

Assam Launches Udasin Bhakat Scheme

Assam has launched a financial assistance scheme for Udasin Bhakats, the celibate Vaishnavite monks associated with Satras across the state. Under the scheme, eligible monks will receive Rs 1,500 every month directly in their bank accounts. The initiative is aimed at supporting those who dedicate their lives to the religious and cultural institutions of Assamese Neo-Vaishnavism.

What Are Udasin Bhakats

Udasin Bhakats are monks who live a celibate life within Satras. Satras are monastic institutions in the Assamese Vaishnavite tradition. They function as centres of worship, learning, and cultural preservation. Devotees gather there for prayers and religious observances. These institutions have played a major role in shaping Assam’s spiritual and social identity.

Scheme Details

The state government has identified 620 Udasin Bhakats for the benefit. The assistance will be transferred monthly through bank accounts. District-wise beneficiaries include:

  • Majuli – 474
  • Jorhat – 54
  • Lakhimpur – 22
  • Kamrup – 14
  • Barpeta – 10
  • Dhubri and Goalpara – 8 each
  • Nagaon – 7
  • Golaghat and Nalbari – 6 each
  • Sivasagar – 5
  • Sonitpur and Udalguri – 3 each

Cultural Significance Of Satras

Satras are central to Assam’s Neo-Vaishnavite heritage. They preserve devotional practices, manuscript traditions, music, dance, and community life. Majuli, the world’s largest river island, is regarded as the main centre of this tradition and is widely known as the land of Satras. The scheme reflects state support for living religious institutions and their custodians.

Administrative And Heritage Context

The launch also marks the role of targeted welfare measures for cultural communities. By extending direct financial support to Udasin Bhakats, the state has linked social assistance with heritage preservation. The initiative may also help document and include monks who were left out of earlier lists.
