The Clinical Laboratory at Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Bengaluru, under the Ministry of Ayush, received ISO 15189:2022 accreditation for Biochemistry and Haematology. It is the first institute under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) to obtain this certification. The laboratory conducted over 1.52 lakh investigations in 2025–26, serving more than 9,300 patients.
Accreditation and Quality Standards
The ISO 15189:2022 accreditation certifies the laboratory’s compliance with international standards for quality and competence in medical laboratories. CARI Bengaluru progressed from NABL entry-level certification in 2022 to full ISO accreditation through rigorous quality control, documentation, and assessments. The laboratory also holds NABL accreditation for 50 test parameters and is advancing towards BIS IS/ISO 9001:2015 certification.
Diagnostic Services and Capacity
The laboratory provides comprehensive diagnostic tests including blood glucose, HbA1c, liver and kidney function, lipid and thyroid profiles, electrolytes, and complete blood counts. It uses fully automated systems and digital reporting tools, delivering faster turnaround times and patient access via SMS, email, and WhatsApp. Test volume increased from 2,770 in 2021 to over 1.55 lakh in 2026.
Institutional Growth and Patient Outreach
OPD attendance rose from 18,918 in 2021 to over 51,300 in 2026. Panchakarma and para-surgical procedures expanded nearly twentyfold. Inpatient services launched in July 2024 have reached near full bed occupancy. Research projects remain consistent at 20–25 annually. The institute also enhanced medicinal plant validation and authentication efforts.
Role in Ayurveda and Future Plans
CARI Bengaluru supports Ayurveda and Ayush treatments by providing reliable diagnostic data for clinical decisions and research. It was the first CCRAS institute to secure NABH and NABL entry-level certifications in 2021–22. The institute plans to expand accredited tests and improve diagnostic capabilities to offer more comprehensive and affordable healthcare.
What to Study for UPSC Exams?
- Ayurveda Research Institutions
- Medical Laboratory Accreditation Standards
- Integration of Traditional and Modern Medicine
- Quality Assurance in Healthcare Services
Ayurveda Research Institutions
Ayurveda research institutions focus on validating traditional knowledge through scientific methods. They often combine clinical trials with herbal pharmacology. Key institutions include CCRAS and CCIM in India, promoting integration of Ayurveda into mainstream healthcare. Many conduct medicinal plant authentication and clinical research to standardize Ayurvedic treatments.
Medical Laboratory Accreditation Standards
Medical laboratory accreditation standards like ISO 15189 specify requirements for quality and competence. They ensure reliable test results through management and technical criteria. NABL and CAP are prominent accreditation bodies. Accreditation involves rigorous audits, proficiency testing, and continuous improvement to maintain laboratory credibility.
Integration of Traditional and Modern Medicine
Integration involves combining Ayurveda, homeopathy, and other traditional systems with allopathic medicine. It aims for holistic patient care, using evidence-based approaches. Countries like India and China have formal policies supporting integrative healthcare. Research focuses on safety, efficacy, and pharmacological interactions between systems.
Quality Assurance in Healthcare Services
Quality assurance in healthcare ensures patient safety, effective treatment, and service reliability. It includes protocols, audits, and accreditation systems like NABH. Continuous monitoring, staff training, and patient feedback are essential components. It reduces errors, improves outcomes, and enhances patient satisfaction.
