EESL to Supply 5 Lakh Induction Cooktops Amid LPG Concerns

EESL to Supply 5 Lakh Induction Cooktops Amid LPG Concerns

The Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) announced a plan to supply 500,000 induction cooktops in two phases across India. This initiative responds to rising LPG supply disruptions and increasing fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Nearly 100,000 units are already being dispatched to state governments and public institutions.

Procurement and Programme Details

EESL has floated fresh tenders for 500,000 induction cooktops, following a recently closed tender for 100,000 units. The initiative is part of the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP), launched in 2023 under the government’s “Go Electric” campaign. The programme targets deployment of 2 million energy-efficient induction cooktops nationwide. The promoted models are 1200W stoves with energy consumption displays and child safety locks.

Consumer Benefits and Pricing

Induction cooking is estimated to provide 20-30% cost savings compared to traditional LPG, with some estimates reaching 35%. EESL has established one-year rate contracts with domestic manufacturers to stabilise prices on its e-commerce platform, EESLmart.in. Units are available starting at ₹1,900, discounted from ₹2,999. Purchases can be made online, via India Post, Common Service Centres (CSC), and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).

Regional and Market Impact

In March 2026, e-commerce platforms reported a 30-fold increase in induction stove sales within two days due to LPG shortage fears. Tamil Nadu announced a ₹2 per unit electricity subsidy for restaurants switching from commercial LPG to induction stoves. Andhra Pradesh approved supply of 44,346 stoves to Anganwadi Centres, and Tripura distributed 2,000 units recently.

Financing and Future Expansion

EESL is negotiating zero-interest EMI schemes with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) to subsidise induction cooktop loans for low-income households. Future phases plan to introduce solar-based stoves with battery storage for rural and off-grid areas to expand clean cooking access.
