The Indian Union Ministry of Minority Affairs is setting the stage to offer employment opportunities to approximately 750,000 artisans and craftsmen through 75 “Hunar Haats”. In a bid to celebrate 75 years of Indian independence, these events, tagged ‘Amrit Mahotsav’, will be organized throughout the nation. Additionally, there are plans to construct 75 “Amrit Mahotsav Parks” on the vacant Waqf lands all over the country under the “Waqf Taraqqiati Scheme” and “Pradhanmantri Jan Vikas Karykram” (PMJVK).
About Hunar Haat
Hunar Haat is an event that showcases handicrafts and traditional products made by artisans from minority communities in India. The main theme for these events is ‘Vocal for Local’. They are organized by the Ministry of Minority Affairs under the USTTAD (Upgrading the Skills & Training in Traditional Arts/Crafts for Development) scheme.
Purpose of the USTTAD scheme
The primary aim of the USTTAD scheme is the promotion and preservation of the rich heritage of the traditional arts and crafts of minority communities. The Hunar Haats are part of this initiative, aiming to provide market exposure as well as employment opportunities to artisans, craftsmen, and traditional culinary experts. The vision is to enhance the skills of craftsmen, weavers, and artisans who are already involved in the traditional ancestral work.
Significance of Hunar Haat
Hunar Haat has proven to be a significant platform for artisans and craftsmen. It acts as an “Empowerment Exchange” that is fundamentally beneficial and encouraging for master artisans and craftsmen. This is primarily because it attracts a massive number of visitors who purchase indigenous handmade products on a large scale, thus promoting traditional arts and crafts. Over the past five years, “Hunar Haat” has provided employment and employment opportunities to more than 500,000 artisans, craftsmen, and people associated with them.
Construction of Amrit Mahotsav Parks
Under the “Waqf Taraqqiati Scheme” and “Pradhanmantri Jan Vikas Karykram” (PMJVK), there are plans to construct 75 “Amrit Mahotsav Parks”. These parks will be built on vacant Waqf lands across the country. The initiative is part of ‘Amrit Mahotsav’, which aims to mark 75 years of India’s independence.
