Empowering Artisans at Shilp Samagam Mela 2024

Empowering Artisans at Shilp Samagam Mela 2024

The Shilp Samagam Mela 2024 was inaugurated at Dilli Haat, New Delhi, by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. This event aims to showcase traditional handicrafts and empower marginalized artisans, particularly from Scheduled Castes (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and sanitation workers. The launch of the ‘TULIP’ programme marks an important step in providing these artisans with a digital platform for e-commerce, enhancing their market reach and economic independence.

The Role of TULIP

The Traditional Artisans’ Upliftment Livelihood Programme (TULIP) is designed to facilitate the global exposure of artisans’ products. This initiative provides access to e-marketing, enabling artisans to sell their goods online. TULIP aims to create sustainable livelihoods by integrating traditional crafts into the modern marketplace, thus preserving cultural heritage while promoting economic self-reliance.

Digital Initiatives Supporting Artisans

The government has introduced various digital platforms such as the PM-SURAKSHA and PM-DAKSH Portals. These initiatives offer targeted communities access to subsidised loans and skill development training. Such digital tools are crucial for empowering artisans, making financial resources and training more accessible than ever before.

Significance of the Fair

Running from 5th to 15th November, the Shilp Samagam Fair features over 105 stalls from 16 states, showcasing a diverse range of traditional handicrafts. Products on display include metal crafts, wooden artifacts, cane and bamboo products, pottery, handloom items, jewellery, and leather goods. The fair not only serves as a marketplace but also as a cultural celebration, featuring daily performances that highlight the rich artistic heritage of India.

Impact on Communities

The initiatives launched have already benefitted approximately 5.6 million individuals and their families through loan assistance and skill training. The Ministry aims to create more marketing opportunities, having already reached over one lakh individuals. The ‘Rang Paridhan’ programme, which promotes uniforms made from artisan products, exemplifies the commitment to honouring local skills and cultural diversity.

Future Prospects

The Shilp Samagam Mela and its associated programmes are expected to continue encouraging economic empowerment and cultural preservation. By creating platforms for artisans to market their products, the government is not only enhancing their livelihoods but also ensuring the survival of traditional crafts in a rapidly modernising economy.
