FASTag Made Mandatory From 1st January 2021

The Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has made FASTag mandatory from 1st of January 2021. The provisions would be applicable to old vehicles as well that has been sold before 1st December, 2017. This would be applicable through the amendments in Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.


As per Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the FASTag was made mandatory for all registration of new four wheeled Vehicles since 1st December 2017. It further mandates the renewal of fitness certificate. It would be done after the fitment of FASTag for the Transport Vehicles. The steps for ensuring the availability of FASTag are also being formalised at multiple channels through physical locations and online mechanisms.


This is a major step for ensuring 100 percent payment of fees at Toll Plazas through the Electronic Means only. The vehicles will pass seamlessly through the Fee Plazas and there would be no waiting time. This way, the system would save the fuels.


The device comprise of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to make payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it. The RFID technology uses the radio waves to read and capture the information stored on a tag attached to any vehicle. The tag can be read from up to several feet away. It does not need to be within the direct line-of-sight of the reader. The tag is fixed on the windscreen of the vehicle. Thus, the vehicle can drive through plazas without stopping. One tag is valid for five years and can be recharged as per requirement.
